Infectious microbes exhaled from a patient can be dispersed to an entire hospital building through central or multi-zone air-handling systems (AHUs). In this study, a contaminant dispersion test was done using toluene-d8 in a real hospital building air conditioned with multizone AHUs for each floor. The dispersion status of the contaminant in steady state was estimated by measuring the concentrations at several positions such as neighbouring wards, corridor, and supply opening of the source ward. The results showed that the contaminant was supplied to all other wards through the AHU and secondary infections through air containing infectious microbes would be predicted.
The UV radiation simulation results showed drastic reductions in concentration for several representative infectious microbes when an ID-UVGI system was applied. It was shown in the field measurement of microbial contamination that the UVGI systems were effective for disinfection.
